'Hobbit' Casting Call: We Want Ryan Gosling,
Orlando Bloom For Tolkien Tale (Source: MTV)
Bard the Bowman
We Say: The role of Bard is the easiest and most tempting way
to shoehorn a huge star — a man's man like Russell Crowe or
Christian Bale — into the production. Although he's more of a
straightforward good guy, lacking the nuance of representative men
from "LOTR," we'd nevertheless like to see Jackson cast an
actor who could invest the character with the same type of soul that
Viggo Mortensen and Sean Bean did with Aragorn and Boromir. We'd
like to see Jackson mend fences with Ryan Gosling, who left
the director's adaptation of "The Lovely Bones."
One of the critics at Entertainment

More plaudits on horizon for actor Ryan in the
new year (source)
Ontario-born thesp Ryan Gosling can do no wrong in the eyes of his
cinematic peers it seems. After picking up an armload of gongs and
amassing critical acclaim throughout 2007, the 27-year-old hunk is
set to receive further recognition in the New Year.
The Notebook star will add to his trophies on January 29
when he collects a special tribute at the Santa Barbara Film
Festival. He's the recipient of the first ever Independent Award –
a prize established to recognise those making a significant
contribution to independent film.
And the Canadian star will be in good company at the festival. Also
scheduled to be presented with honours are Angelina Jolie and Cate
Blanchett, Spanish heart-throb Javier Bardem and veteran actor Tommy
Lee Jones.
Ryan's also in the running for a Critic's Choice Award, having
bagged his second nod in a row for best actor. After being nominated
last year for indie hit Half Nelson, the actor will be
hoping to take home the prize for his role in offbeat romantic
comedy Lars And The Real Girl at the January 7 ceremony.
According to US reports the star's love life could soon be getting a
boost, too. Over the weekend the handsome Fracture actor
apparently approached Heroes newcomer Hayden Panettiere
while she was lunching at LA hangout Chateau Marmont, resulting in
an exchange of phone numbers with the starlet.

.... Meaning, the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards scheduled for Jan. 13 will likely find itself not only without union writers, but without top talent, as well, if the WGA ends up picketing the event, billed as the most glamorous Oscar preview around.
..... "I want to talk to Tom Hanks about it because I imagine he always does the right thing," suggested
Ryan Gosling, up for best actor in a comedy or musical for Lars and the Real Girl. Hanks is competing in the same category, having received a nod for Charlie Wilson's War.

Strictly Business (source)
(note: a follow up to the report below from People.com)
RYAN Gosling was photographed last week with
"Heroes" cutie Hayden Panettiere. But Tuesday
night, he only had eyes for Heath Ledger's ex, Michelle
Williams. The two had dinner at Piadina and were caught by
onlookers having a cozy cigarette outside the West 10th Street
eatery. The star of "Lars and the Real Girl" was
"smiling and gazing at her," said our witness. Reps for
both said they weren't on a date, but just discussing an upcoming
film project they're working on together. We'll see.
Under-30 crowd gets its Golden Globe moment (source)
Ryan Gosling, 27, whose character falls in love with a life-size
female doll in "Lars and the Real Girl," was nominated for
best actor in the same category.
"It's still dominated by those over 30," Gosling said of
the nominees. "We still have our work cut out for us. I've got
to act fast because I'm going to be one of them soon."
DECEMBER 14, 2007 - Golden Globe nomination!! - Posted by Jamie @ 12:45am
BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Ryan, as he was just
nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical
for Lars and the Real Girl!!! The award show will be held on January
13.
Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams Spend Time Together (source)
Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams share the honor of being recent
Oscar nominees. But are they sharing a bit more these days?
The actors, both 27, were spotted walking along Bleecker Street in
New York's Greenwich Village on Tuesday night, stopping for some
photos with fans near Sullivan Street.
Gosling, a nominee for Half Nelson, was back in New York
after running into Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere – and
exchanging numbers – at a restaurant in L.A. over the weekend,
according to the New York Daily News. Gosling recently split with
actress Rachel McAdams.
Williams, an Oscar nominee for Brokeback Mountain, is also
recently single, she split with Heath Ledger, with whom she has a
2-year-old daughter, Matilda.
The actors' reps did not return calls for comment.
Golden Globes set new faces on road to stardom (source)
Since the Golden Globe nominations are often a reliable guide to Oscar nominations in January, Ryan Gosling -- a newcomer last year for playing a drug addict in "Half Nelson" -- had some timely advice for the Golden Globe freshmen.
"If there is ever a time to pick up the phone, it's now," Gosling told Reuters.

Cate Blanchett and Ryan Gosling have something in common — they both were absolutely blown away by the performance of Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose.
“Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose was absolutely astonishing, and the synthesis of the performance with the whole film is superb,” gushed Blanchett recently. “As much as inhabiting
Piaf, she was also creating a creature, and I thought that was astonishing and inspiring. One of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen.”
.... Ryan Gosling was next in line to shower praise upon the overlooked actress.
“Not only did she craft a flawless impersonation of a famous personality, but Marion’s humanity elevated her performance to a devastatingly honest and yet seemingly effortless personification of integrity and grace,” Gosling declared. “To me, this is more than just a great performance; it’s a document of this actress’s overwhelming ability to love.”

The weekend before cameras rolled, Gosling left the project. He later told Parade magazine that while Jackson is an "incredible filmmaker," he felt too young to play the grieving father of a murdered girl who witnesses the events following her death from Heaven.
"There's no dirt, really," Sarandon tells Sun Media. "I just don't want to get into it ... We worked with Ryan for a few weeks, rehearsing."
Mark Wahlberg has stepped into the role, a move even Gosling has said he believes is better for the film.

Rugged Style (source)
BEARDED and puffy Ryan Gosling is really taking his
lumberjack look to the next level. Gosling, who was recently axed
from Peter Jackson's "Lovely Bones," was spotted at
the West 14th Street Urban Outfitters the other day "stocking
up on flannel shirts." One customer told us, "He had the
biggest shopping bag" and a "huge backpack"
that kept setting off the store's security alarm. When Gosling was
finally let loose, a flirty shopper asked, "Trying to steal
stuff?" - to which Gosling joked, "Yeah, a necklace."
Maybe the choker was for the sexy brunette he was spotted canoodling
with that night.
OCTOBER 28, 2007 - News - Posted by Jamie @ 10:09am
Ryan has talked about his departure from The
Lovely Bones and rumours that he was "difficult" to work
with.
Q. Did Lord of the Rings guru Peter Jackson fire Ryan Gosling just before filming was to start on The Lovely Bones?
(source)
— W.N. , Dayton, Ohio
A. Gosling did indeed leave the production based on the hugely popular bestselling novel. His role as the father of missing Susie Salmon now goes to Mark Wahlberg. Gossip reports have thrown out an avalanche of rumors about his departure, ranging from he was "too difficult" for Jackson to work with to the twenty pounds he gained for the role made him look too fat.
Ryan wasn’t hiding behind a "no comment" when I asked what really happened. "I think, people are making it a far more interesting story than it actually is," he says. "The age of the character versus my real age was always a concern of mine. Peter and I tried to make it work and ultimately it just didn’t. I think the film is much better off with Mark Walhberg in that role. Peter Jackson is an incredible filmmaker and I’m here to tell you that he has things up his sleeve that are going to blow peoples’ minds. I’m going to be the first person in line to buy tickets."
As for the report that he was difficult to work with, Gosling says, "The media always slant things in a negative direction. If somebody said I was easy to work with, they’d make that sound bad, too."
In the meantime, Ryan is basking in the good buzz surrounding Lars and the Real Girl—no objectivity here—it’s one of my favorite films of the year. Go see it before everyone tells you about it.
Of course, I asked him what's next and got a very sincere "haven’t decided!" — Jeanne Wolf

OCTOBER 23, 2007 - More on LB drop out - Posted by Jamie @ 1:30pm
This could be the reason why Ryan dropped out of
Lovely Bones:
Gosling and Clooney drop projects (source)
Peter Jackson was said to be quite surprised that Gosling had showed
up to start work on "The Lovely Bones" looking like he'd
donned a fat suit. According to sources, the 26-year-old Gosling had
apparently told the director he was going to gain weight to age
himself up to play the part of a grieving father, but Jackson was
still expecting some movie star allure -- not paunch and a beard.
By Friday, Gosling had left the high-profile production over those
pesky "creative differences," and, by Sunday, he'd been
replaced by 36-year-old Mark Wahlberg, who actually could be old
enough to father a teenager.
A quote from Anthony Hopkins from NY
Post about working with Ryan and forgetting what movie they were

"Ryan Gosling. He was a good kid, good actor. I like him

Bob Thompson with more on Ryan Gosling from Rod Lurie
(source)
After considering Ryan Gosling for his remake of Straw Dogs, Rod Lurie added a few more thoughts Sunday be email on the subject of Gosling doing the Dustin Hoffman character.
"He really is the new Dustin Hoffman of the seventies," Lurie said of Gosling. "He's a great actor, not traditionally handsome, but kind of magnetic anyway. I assure you, though, that we'd be doing HIM no
favors."
Of Gosling the director also said: "I don't know if the guy is on every studio list, but I assure you he's on every director's list."
And now Lurie wants us to put or thinking caps on? "While we're at it, who do you like for the Susan George role?" he asked me.
I'm thinking. If anybody has ideas, let me know. I will pass them on.

Whoever plays the young Kirk and Spock, with J.J. Abrams, Alex

Rachel & Ryan: Taking a Break (source: USMagazine)
Rachel McAdams, 30, and Ryan Gosling, 26, are spending
some time apart.
“It’s a break, not a breakup,” says one source, who adds that
while McAdams is very dependent on Gosling, the recent Oscar nominee
wants some distance so he can focus on his sizzling career. (A
source had told Us last week that the couple would soon get
hitched.)
“It’s a pivotal moment for him,” says the insider.
Still, McAdams “is taking it really hard because Ryan is
everything to her,” says a source.
A third insider, who says the pair split several weeks ago, adds,
“Ryan was in love with her, but it didn’t work out because of
their conflicting work schedules.”
Says the pal, “They’re both miserable. Hopefully they’ll get
back together soon.”
McAdams' rep call the story is “completely false.”

Ryan Gosling's Trip To Africa Sparks Film About Darfur
(source)
Ryan Gosling has put his new movie about the horrors of Sudan on the fast track after witnessing the worst of human nature during an Oscars-season trip to Africa. The star turned his back on Tinseltown's annual prizegiving to jet to Africa so he could research a screenplay he is writing during recent peace talks in Sudan's Darfur region.
He had hoped he'd be further inspired by the visit but now he knows how important it is to get the message about the horrors of refugee camps and the murdering Lord's Resistance Army
(LRA) onto a big screen.
He says, "It was brutal. Over 30,000 kids have been abducted from their homes in the last 20 years; 1.5 million people have been internally displaced in displaced persons camps. It was unimaginable poverty. I met a little girl, who, at one and a half, had been wrapped in a carpet and burned by the
LRA. She was sick when we met her and we took her to the hospital and she ended up having HIV as well.
"The sad thing is that's not really anything special. Everyone around her had their own situation. It's just endless. I wrote the script; it's not great, I'm not a writer but it doesn't matter because the situation is what it is, and the kids are who they are. If I finally get to make the film it will be with kids who have been part of this. It'll be a narrative version of their own stories... I hope to make it this year."

You'd have a hard time finding anyone who doesn't think Rachel McAdams is an absolute doll. But these days, her real-life boyfriend Ryan Gosling may be taking that idea a bit too far. In October's "Lars and the Real Girl," which just finished shooting, the Oscar-nominated actor plays "a guy who falls in love with a sex doll," he said. With a plot like that, the flick seems certain to be the first full-on comedy from the typically intense star. But before you start having painful flashbacks to "Mannequin," Gosling was quick to point out that the whole movie is played straight. "It's probably the closest thing to 'The Notebook' that I've done since," he insisted. "It's a real love story. He believes that she's real, and there's a whole love story." Co-starring fellow awards-season heavyweights Patricia Clarkson and Emily Mortimer, the movie's script comes from the brain of "Six Feet Under" writer Nancy Oliver.

Ryan Gosling opens about Rachel McAdams (source)
First Rachel McAdams told
Elle that her boyfriend influenced her film choices –
and now Ryan Gosling has returned the compliment.
"She's kind. She doesn't need any help from me. She's inspired
me to do so much as well," Gosling, 26, said Sunday when asked
about McAdams's comments at a junket for his new thriller Fracture.
McAdams, 30, told the magazine's April issue that her beau – and
costar in 2004's The Notebook – "never does the same
thing twice. He's very brave."
But Gosling, a Best Actor Oscar nominee for Half Nelson,
says McAdams has good judgment in her own right: "She's the
most discerning person I've ever met. She'll read a script 100
times. She's relentless."
And she's not bad looking, either: Asked to comment on McAdams's
cover shot for the magazine, Gosling was momentarily tongue-tied.
"Oh ... yeah ..." he said. "She looks stunning!
Absolutely – yeah!"

MARCH 14, 2007 - Donations to Joyce - Posted by Jamie @ 9:25am
*URGENT: PLEASE READ*
Recently, Ryan took a trip to Uganda to scout location for his directorial
debut, The Lord's Resistance. While there, he visited hospitals and met one
particular girl named Joyce, who suffered from extreme burns three years ago
because of children soldiers. Ryan is doing everything he can to bring her to
the US so that she can be assisted with the best doctors.
To make a donation, go to http://www.creativevisions.org
and cheques should be made out to "Creative Visions" and specify in
the memory "Joyce Fund".
When you make a donation, you can be added to their mailing list to get updates
on Joyce.
Please guys, do what you can to help out Joyce :-) (thanks to lizoid for all the

Stars Model Diamond Teardrop Pins (source)
Oscar nominees LEONARDO DiCAPRIO, DJIMON HOUNSOU and RYAN GOSLING were among the
stars making a subtle diamond trade protest at the Academy Awards last night
(25FEB07).
The three actors wore red teardrop pins after agreeing to model the Amnesty
International symbols aimed at raising awareness about diamonds mined in war
zones.
DiCaprio and Hounsou were both nominated for their roles in BLOOD DIAMOND, which
further highlights the issue of gem-mining in global trouble spots.
Meanwhile, Gosling plans to auction off his pin to raise cash for a Ugandan
burns victim he recently met.
Speaking on the red carpet last night, the actor said, "Her name's JOYCE. I
met her a week ago. Eighty per cent of her body is covered in burns. She was
wrapped in a carpet and set on fire. This is an example of what's going on in
northern Uganda.

Topping the competition was, per Gosling himself, likely a onetime ordeal.
"Forest called me last night and asked if I could win for him
tonight," he said of Whitaker, who was not present at the show. "It's
exhausting winning...He said that. I wouldn't know.
"He better win tomorrow night. I've got a lot of money on him
winning."
After snagging his award, Gosling touched on his reputation as an independent
leading man, saying the association wasn't wholly deserved.
"I've been trying to sell out for years, no one wants me," he said.
"Maybe this will help."

Not one single film critic selected Canada's Ryan Gosling to win Best Actor for
his role in "Half Nelson." Instead, Forest Whitaker is the
overwhelming favourite for his role in "The Last King of Scotland,"
receiving 93 per cent of the vote.
FastLife.com did a light hearted survey on this year's Oscar nominees from
dateability to kissability with their users - thanks to Matt - Here's where Ryan
came in:
Gosling May Kiss FastLife's Brides – Respondents chose Ryan Gosling
first among all nominees in the date and marry categories. The star of
"Half Nelson" didn't need to twist any arms to solicit votes,
particularly in the marry category, where he received a whopping 49 percent of
the vote (a leap ahead of the closest competitor, Mark Wahlberg with 24%). In
addition to his on-screen acting exposure, Gosling's kissing talents have been
on public display; he and current girlfriend Rachel McAdams won best kiss at the
2005 MTV Movie Awards, which lent credibility to his smooching skills.

Where is Ryan Gosling hiding? (source)
Where’s Ryan Gosling? The Oscar-nominated “Half Nelson” star was a
surprise entry on the Oscar slate. But he’s been pretty much MIA from the
campaign circuit. He wasn't even at the prestigious and essential campaign stop
-- the Oscar Nominees Luncheon -- this week. Even Peter O'Toole showed up for
that. Doesn't Ryan want to win?
According to Bonnie Abaunza of Amnesty International, Ryan is in Uganda scouting
locations for “The Lord’s Resistance Army,” a film about child soldiers in
East Africa. Gosling’s producing the film, co-writing the script, will direct
and star in it. With him in Uganda are child soldier expert Jimmy Briggs, author
of “Innocents Lost,” and John Prendergast, D.C-based senior advisor to the
International Crisis Group. He’s the guy who took Angelina Jolie on her first
trip to the eastern Congo in 2003 and helped George Clooney recently appear at
the United Nations to seek help for Darfur’s thousands of dead and millions of
displaced civil war victims.
While there, they visited some hospitals and aid centers funded by Nic Cage’s
$2.5 million contribution to help rehabilitate child soldiers. Yesterday
morning, Bonnie got a frantic call from Ryan, Jimmy and John asking for her
help.
At one hospital, the trio met a 3-year-old girl whose village had been attacked
and destroyed by the child soldiers in the Lord’s Resistance Army.
“She had been thrown into a fire to burn to death. But she managed to wriggle
out. The child soldiers grabbed her, wrapped her in a rug and threw her back in.
But she managed to crawl out again, stay hidden in the brush and survive. She
was just 18 months old. She’s still alive but is horribly burned. The carpet
is embedded in her head. She has a cerebral infection and is in terrible pain
with every movement and every breath,” says Abaunza.
"She cannot grow because her skin is so scarred. The brave little girl
needs more help than the Doctors Without Borders can provide and her only hope
now is to get to the U.S. and be given long-term treatment at a Burn
Center."
Ryan, Jimmie and John are determined to get her out of Uganda and flown to the
U.S. for specialized care and Bonnie is trying to arrange airfare and medical
care as fast as she can. So if you wonder where the Oscar-nommed actor has been
during the fabulous frenzied awards season, that’s what he's been up to.
Freaking inspiring, isn't it?

Variety has finally announced about Ryan's
directorial debut:
Gosling recruits 'Army' for directorial debut (source)
Ryan Gosling is following up his Oscar acting nom for "Half Nelson"
with a passion project: directing a feature about child soldiers in Africa.
Tentatively titled "The Lord's Resistance Army," pic will star nonpros
and child soldiers, whom Gosling has helped find in East Africa.
Thesp, who is penning the script, has raised nearly all the necessary financing
for the project.
Gosling has been barraged with offers for studio pics since his perf in
"Half Nelson" began gaining traction. He's set to star opposite
Anthony Hopkins in New Line thriller "Fracture" and with Patricia
Clarkson in MGM's "Lars and the Real Girl."
But one person familiar with the Africa project said the directorial gig is
paramount. "He's going to make this a priority before anything else,"
insider said.
Child soldiers have been a hot media topic of late.
Starbucks' second book selection last month was a memoir by Ishmael Beah, a
former Sierra Leone conscript whose work also was excerpted in the New York
Times Magazine. It also has featured in the storylines of pics such as
"Blood Diamond."
